Born and Raised in Montana: The Story Behind Heart In Montana

There’s a certain kind of magic that happens when you grow up in Montana.

A kind of quiet that settles into your bones.

A kind of beauty that shapes you long before you understand it.

I grew up with mountains literally in my back yard, pine trees standing like old friends, and skies so vast they felt like you’re in another world. Crisp air on your skin, sunsets that lingered, and lakes that mirrored the whole world back at you.

And even though life has taken me beyond Montana, my heart never really left.

This is the story behind Heart In Montana, and why I felt called to create this space.

Growing Up Under the Big Sky

I was raised in the kind of Montana that still feels untouched: open land, gravel roads, and neighbors who knew your whole family history. I didn’t realize at the time how deeply that simplicity was shaping me and I definitely took it for granted.

Montana teaches you things without ever saying a word:

  • how to breathe deeply
  • how to slow down
  • how to notice beauty
  • how to be both strong and gentle
  • how to appreciate the kind of quiet most people never get to hear

My childhood wasn’t fancy or flashy. It was real. Honest. Grounded. Rooted in community and faith and a sense of belonging that’s hard to put into words.

And if you’ve ever spent time in Montana, truly spent time, you probably understand exactly what I mean.

The Lessons Montana Leaves You With

Everyone takes something different from Montana, but here’s what it left in me:

Simplicity. Life doesn’t have to be busy or complicated to be beautiful.

Resilience. Winter will toughen you up in the best ways. This is a FACT!

Reverence for creation. You can’t look at a Montana mountain range and not feel something sacred.

Community. Small towns shape you in ways that last forever.

Gratitude. When you grow up with mountains as your backdrop, you never forget them.

These things became part of who I am, and they’re a huge part of why I wanted to build this blog.

Why I Started Heart In Montana

To put it simply:

I wanted to help people see Montana the way I still feel it.

When I looked around online, I saw plenty of generic travel lists, influencer snapshots, and posts written by people who visited for a long weekend and crowned themselves experts. But Montana deserves better than that.

It deserves a local voice.

A local heart.

A local story.

I created Heart In Montana because there’s something special about learning from someone who grew up here; someone who knows the backroads, the real hot springs, the small-town cafés, the hidden lakes, the places locals actually go.

And honestly?

I feel like God nudged this idea onto my heart at the exact right moment.

Sometimes He brings things full circle in a way that only He can. I once ran away from the place that shaped me, but now I see all the beauty in it.

This blog is my way of honoring the place that raised me, and helping you experience it with the same wonder I grew up with.
